As a member of the tattooed tribe, I think you missed the point completely...It isn't about being an individual but a very marked member of a tribe...same meaning that any human adornment has always had .
There is also a genuine shared esthetic just like any other human preference...some like smelly cheese and some don't : )
Yes, I guess there must be a tribal membership thing with regard to Maori tattoos, which is not a thing that I know much about at all. But what motivates a housewife when she says "I might get a butterfly tattooed on my ankle"?
