Lili's irritated thought of the day

We've been sent a note from the school of one of our children warning us that there has been an outbreak of whooping cough in our community. Thanks so much to our local idiot immunization-fearing Mums and Dads! I hope no babies die because of your personal decisions. I bet none of you people will be stepping forward to apologise if such a thing does happen.

Wait! I think I got vaccinated for that back in 1955, or then-abouts! Was not that problem solved?

Yah, I know, you are always making a bet when you offer to get vaccinated, or have your children vaccinated. I do believe vaccination is the way to bet. The descriptions I have read about death by diphtheria really do quite horrify me.

We didn't have measles vaccine when I was a kid, so all my Mom could do for me when I caught it was keep the lights dim and feed me Campbell's Tomato Soup. I am afraid that an awful lot of that soup came right back up, entirely too much of it through my nose.

I reckon that's why I dislike the stuff, to this day.

Oh dear!

Whooping cough is still around. I think it might be one of those diseases that can be caught even if you are vaccinated, so I guess it doesn't get eradicated completely by high rates of vaccination. We can only do our best to control such hazards.

I am, to this day, annoyed about the improperly treated scarlet fever I had when small. Parents hired an old-fashioned doctor. He made house calls, which was good. He did not cure me instantaneously with an antibiotic injection, which was bad. I ended up with myopia in one eye, thus forever dashing my hopes of being a dashing Naval Aviator.

The USN tried to recruit me with a full scholarship to be an officer anyway, but if I could not imitate Thach and O'Hare, I was not interested. Hey, I was 17!

I didn't know one could get myopia from an infection. You learn something new each day.

I think there are many people who have an unattained desire to fly a plane. I've never quite understood the attraction of aviation, but I've seen it first-hand in others.

Oh, it is a burning desire in me, you betcha. I got to fly a Piper Apache for a little while, a Grumman Widgeon for a little longer while, and an Aeronca Champ for a reasonable while.

I built lots and lots of model airplanes, and proudly lost a bunch of them out of sight overhead in thermals.

Flying is fun! It is the most fun you can have in the daytime with yer pants on!

Unfortunately, it costs out the wazoo. Defying gravity is EXPENSIVE.
