Lili's un-Australian thought of the day

These days the really essential jobs in Australia are done by Maoris, Cockneys, Ex-South Africans, ex-Irish folks or thoroughly useless locals, with the odd token native here and there.

Where are the jobs for the good honest convicts who've been there for sometimes as many as several generations?

I'm sure there are plenty of jobs in useful occupations like teaching, nursing, police, the trades, but the pay and the conditions are so poor, and the institutions so corrupted, that only the desperate are interested in these careers, so we have imports filling in the empty spaces. Not one but two of my own kids have been appalled by the shabby way that government schools and the education bureaucracy treat some of their best teachers, while some truly crap chalkies with a flair for self-promotion get by happily.
